School Counsellor

The School Counsellor

There is an ever growing awareness that the school and the home are interdependent in each child's wellbeing.  The counsellor's role has changed and is continuing to change with this awareness.

The classroom teacher is the most important "other" adult in every school child's life.  The counsellor's role is to help the classroom teacher and the parents to ensure the child has the best chance the system provides.

Counsellors are expected to psychologically and cognitively assess the child with the parent's permission.  They advise on the best placement for children. They liaise with, make referrals to and accept referrals from other agencies – ophthalmologists, speech therapists, community paediatric units.  They have an overview of the child's long term best interests from pre-school to Year 12.  The counsellor's first duty of care will always be your child.

Access to the School Counsellor is available through the Learning Support Team, the Principal and your child's class teacher.
